What is a Prediction Market?
Prediction markets let you buy “yes” and “no” contracts on future events. So, you might buy the “yes” contract on the Kansas City Chiefs winning the next Super Bowl for $0.40. If the Chiefs triumph, you would receive $1.00 per contract owned, securing a profit of $0.60 in the process.
However, you can also cash out by selling your contracts early. You might do this if the Chiefs make the playoffs, and you don’t want to wait until the Super Bowl itself to lock in a profit from your prediction. At this stage of the season, their “yes” contract price might drift up to $0.75, allowing you to profit $0.35 from every contract that you own.
While many prediction markets are focused on sports, you can also buy political, economic, cultural, and global contracts on a whole host of events throughout the calendar year.

Prediction markets have exploded onto the scene, particularly in the United States. Monthly trades at prediction markets were at around $100 million in January 2024. Fast forward to November 2025, and that figure stood at around $13 billion, representing an incredible upturn.
Kalshi and Polymarket, the leading platforms in the US, handled between 15 and 20 billion contracts in November 2025, processing a notional volume of $10 billion.
Other popular prediction markets in the US, including Crypto.com and PredictIt, aren’t quite at those levels, but have made significant steps forward in the last year.
This exceptional growth can be attributed to several factors. First is the broad availability and the ease of access. Prediction markets can be accessed by everyone in all 50 US states. In contrast, there are at least 11 states in the US in which sports betting is not legal, so prediction markets serve many as a viable alternative.
Next is the legality and regulation of prediction markets. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) federally regulates all prediction markets, which are legally regarded as trading platforms, rather than betting sites.
The likes of Kalshi, Polymarket, and PredictIt all operate under oversight from the CFTC, and there’s no need for state-level regulation, as is the case with online sportsbooks and casinos.
